چکیده
Optical collective Thomson scattering (TS) is used to diagnose magnetized high energy density physics experiments at the Magpie pulsed-power generator Imperial College London. The system uses an amplified pulse from second harmonic of a Nd:YAG laser (3 J, 8 ns, 532 nm) probe wide diversity high-temperature plasma objects, with densities in range 1017–1019 cm?3 and temperatures between 10 eV few keV. scattered light collected 100 ?m-scale volumes within plasmas, which are imaged onto optical fiber arrays. Multiple collection systems observe these different directions, providing simultaneous probing K-vectors (and associated ?-parameters, typically 0.5–3), allowing independent measurements separate velocity components bulk flow. arrays coupled imaging spectrometer gated intensified charge device. configured view ion-acoustic waves spectrum. Fits spectra theoretical spectral function S(K, ?) yield local velocities. Fitting constrained by electron interferometry corresponding for vectors. This TS diagnostic has been successfully implemented on experiments, revealing temperature flow transitions across shocks, inside rotating jets imploding wire arrays, as well direct drift velocities magnetic reconnection current sheet.

متن کاملDiagnosing collisions of magnetized, high energy density plasma flows using a combination of collective Thomson scattering, Faraday rotation, and interferometry (invited).
A suite of laser based diagnostics is used to study interactions of magnetised, supersonic, radiatively cooled plasma flows produced using the Magpie pulse power generator (1.4 MA, 240 ns rise time). Collective optical Thomson scattering measures the time-resolved local flow velocity and temperature across 7-14 spatial positions. The scattering spectrum is recorded from multiple directions, all...

High Energy Density (HED) experiments at the HHT experimental site of the GSI Plasma Physics Group employ intense, energetic uranium beams in order to study new regimes of the equation of state (EOS) of matter under extreme conditions. A key parameter to be determined in these experiments is the density distribution in the irradiated and heated target. Determining the spatial and density distri...

A Thomson scattering opticals system is described with the following characteristics: (1) it allows scattering angles down to 1 mrad before collection optics interfere with beam dumping; (2) it gives excellent k resolution for angles of > or approximately 1.5 mrad; (3) it collects light from a scattering volume which can be variably positioned without optical realignment; and (4) it is compact ...
